Preemptive Accusation
Station 6 of 31 on the Dodging blame line. Code B 06
What is Preemptive Accusation?
They accuse you of something first, often something they are doing themselves. Later, when you raise it, it sounds like you are just copying them or getting even.
It can sound like
- “I just want you to know I’ve noticed how you talk about people behind their backs.” (said before you have said a word about them)
- I’m sure you’re going to say I’m the difficult one, but it’s you who always makes things hard.
- Funny, she’s going to tell you I ignored her. She’s the one who never replies to anything.
Signs it might be this
- The charge appears before you have said or done anything to set it off.
- It mirrors, almost word for word, the account you were about to give.
- It is told to third parties who will later hear your side, and not to you.
- When you do raise your concern, it is met with ‘I said you’d do this’ and not with an answer.
- The first accusation has no specific example behind it, only a general label.
Signs it is probably something else
- The early complaint comes with a specific, checkable example.
- They respond to your account on its merits even though they spoke first.
- Both of you are in a long-running dispute and each has been voicing grievances for weeks.
- They told you directly, not behind your back, and invited a reply.
- The overlap in your complaints can be explained by a shared, visible event.
- The early accusation names something specific that can be checked, and I can tell they are open to the answer.
- They hear my account without referring back to what they said earlier.
- Others heard it as one person’s view and are still willing to hear mine.
Questions to ask yourself
- Did their accusation come before I said anything, or in reply to something I did?
- Does it match what I was about to raise, or just resemble it in general?
- Who heard it first, and did they tell me or only others?
- Is there a specific example behind it that I can check, or only a label?
- When I speak, do they answer the content, or only point to having said it first?
What it is
Preemptive accusation puts a charge on the record first. The accuser may name the other person’s supposed fault before any concern has been voiced.
Sometimes it is the very thing they expect to be told about themselves. When the other person later speaks, the account already sounds familiar, or like payback.
One early complaint can be a coincidence, since two people often notice the same problem. Look at the timing.
The early charge keeps landing just before a conversation that could have gone the other way.
Why it matters
By the time the other person speaks, the ground has been prepared. An accurate account arrives sounding like retaliation for one already made, and the person raising it spends their effort defending their motives.
How it shows up
- An accusation made ahead of time, usually before the accused person has said or done anything to prompt it.
- Often a mirror image: the charge is the one the accuser expects to face.
- Seen in friend groups, workplaces, families and online communities, wherever others will later judge between two accounts.
- The earlier charge works as a kind of cover story, so the later true account has to push past it.
What you can do
Pick what fits. You do not owe anyone a confrontation.
Words you could use
“I heard you raised this about me before we talked. I’d like to answer that, and I’d also like my own concern heard separately, on what happened, not as a response to your complaint.”
Ask about it gently
Name what you are seeing without attacking: ‘You raised this about me before I’d said anything. Can I tell you what I was going to bring up?’
Set a clear limit
Ask to take the topics one at a time. You could say: ‘I’ll answer your point, and then I’d like mine heard on its own, not as a reaction.’
Step back
If every attempt to raise your concern gets ‘I said you would’, stop that line and put your account in writing for later.
Get support
Tell someone neutral your account, with dates, before the first accusation hardens, and ask them to note when you raised it.
At work, school or with services
Keep dated notes of when you first noticed the problem. In any report, say when your concern began and why it was not voiced sooner.
Using this label fairly
- Saying ‘you’re preempting me’ can silence a person who really did notice a problem first and is entitled to report it.
- If you treat every early complaint as strategy, you ignore that the person who speaks first is sometimes simply right.
How it differs from look-alikes
Whataboutism answers an accusation you have made by pointing at some other fault of yours. Preemptive accusation comes before yours exists.
DARVO needs you to have accused them first, so that they can deny and reverse it. Blame-Shifting also follows an act or a complaint.
This one is defined by its timing: the charge is placed ahead of the account it is meant to cover.
