Demonstrating Omnipotence

Showing they know everything you do

Station 15 of 33 on the Control over your life line. Code C 15

Safety first

Take it seriously if the displays involve knowing where you are with no explanation, or appearing at places you chose to be alone. Also take it seriously if they refer to your children, home or work.

Before you raise it or change any settings, check your phone and accounts for tracking. A sudden loss of access can be noticed.

So get help from a domestic abuse advocate or a technology safety service.

What is Demonstrating Omnipotence?

Someone keeps showing you how much they know and can do, in ways you never asked for. After a while, trying anything on your own starts to feel useless.

It can sound like

  • I know you stopped at the pharmacy before work.
  • Funny, I was in your building today. Small world.
  • I had a quiet word with your manager. Don’t worry about it.
Check it step by step in the guideTick what fits, compare look-alikes and save it, all on your own device.

Signs it might be this

  • They know things about your movements or plans that you did not share and cannot trace.
  • The displays come right after you mention a decision, such as a move, a new job, or time with friends.
  • The reach is always described in terms of what they could do about you or your plans.
  • You find yourself dropping options you would otherwise have tried, and the reason is what they might find out.
  • Asking how they knew gets a smile, a vague answer, or a hint that it is better not to ask.

Signs it is probably something else

  • When you ask how they knew, they explain simply and the explanation checks out.
  • The information they hold is something you had told them yourself, and you had forgotten.
  • They use their contacts to help with something you asked for, and not to comment on something you did not.
  • The surprise appearance happens once, at a public event you both had reason to attend.
  • Your plans remain yours to change, and nobody reacts to them.
  • Their knowledge has a traceable and ordinary source, and they tell you what it is when asked.
  • The reach is mentioned once and does not return in later disagreements.
  • Your decisions go ahead and are met with interest rather than comment on what they could do about them.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Can I trace how they know what they know, and does the explanation hold up?
  • Did the display arrive at a moment when I was making a decision of my own?
  • Has a particular option quietly left my list because of what they might see or hear?
  • Is the reach I am being shown real, or only stated and never checked?
  • Do I feel watched in places where I should feel unobserved?

What it is

Demonstrating Omnipotence is a display of reach. It might be knowing where you were, or turning up where you did not expect them.

It might be mentioning in passing that they got an outcome changed. The display leaves the person watching with one conclusion, that pushing back would fail.

One surprise usually has an ordinary source, such as a mutual friend or a shared calendar. Concern grows when displays repeat and serve no practical purpose.

It also grows when they land just as you were weighing a choice of your own.

Why it matters

Resistance can stop before anything has been tried, because it has already been made to look pointless. The loss is a choice you never test, and since nothing was tested, you may not notice that it was given up.

How it shows up

  • A show of knowledge or influence with no job to do except be seen. An example is a detail about your week that nobody told them.
  • Surprise appearances at your gym, your office door or your family gathering. They are offered as a coincidence or a favor.
  • Hints of connections: a word with your landlord, your boss, your ex, or someone at your school.
  • A claim of reach that may be exaggerated, since the effect comes from what you believe and not from whether it is true.
  • Often paired with warmth, as in ‘I only want to keep you safe’, which makes the display harder to object to.

What you can do

Read the safety note at the top first. If speaking up could make things worse, skip the wording below and talk to someone you trust or a local support service.

Words you could use

“I want to be the one who decides when my plans get shared. I’m happy to tell you what I’m up to, but I’d rather not go back over how anything was found out.” Skip it if you expect anger. Bring the pattern to an advocate instead.

Ask about it gently

Share less about plans in the moment. If it feels safe, answer lightly with ‘I haven’t decided yet.’ Do not ask how they knew. An advocate can help you check devices and accounts.

Set a clear limit

If it feels safe, ask for privacy over your plans in calm, plain words, without arguing about what they can do. You might say: ‘I’d like to be the one who decides when my plans get shared.’

Step back

When a display comes up, keep your response short and ordinary instead of showing alarm or awe, and change the subject. If it has felt unsafe, tell a trusted person before you do anything else.

Get support

Write down each incident with the date and what was said. Then show the list to a friend, counselor or advocate who can judge the pattern from outside.

At work, school or with services

If a colleague or supervisor shows knowledge of your private life, or hints at influence over your position, note dates and words. Then raise it with HR or a union representative in writing.

Using this label fairly

  • Reading every coincidence or well-informed friend as proof of surveillance can fuel fear without evidence. Trace one example at a time and check how it was possible.
  • If you use the label for someone who is only well-connected or boastful, you mistake a personality for a pattern of control.

How it differs from look-alikes

Monitoring & Surveillance involves actually demanding access to your activity. Here the display of knowing, however it was gained, is the whole point.

Location Tracking depends on a specific mechanism such as live sharing. This can rest on a few remarks and a surprise visit.

Isolation cuts your ties to other people. This one aims at your belief that anything you attempt will be known and countered.
